You are bidding on a rare baseball card of JOSH DEVORE, outfielder for the New York Giants. This card is from a lot of 17 Baltimore News Newsboys Series cards consigned to me by a family in the Baltimore area. They had been collected by the owner's great grandfather, a newsboy himself, and had been in the family since 1911. This card has been graded VERY GOOD 3 by PSA. The Baltimore News Newsboys Series baseball card set is a rare variation of the anonymous E-94 set released with several candy-related products. The Baltimore Newsboys were distributed by the Baltimore News newspaper and can be dated as 1911 based on the players' team designations. Like the E-94s, the set contains 30 different players, whose names are listed on the back. Despite their similarity with E-94s, Baltimore Newsboys were listed with the periodical cards in Jefferson Burdick's The American Card Catalog because they were distributed with newspapers as opposed to candy products. They were assigned a catalog number M-131. What is unique about M-131s is that instead of having an anonymous unattributed back or a back overprinted with a brand name like the E-94s, their backs show the following text actually incorporated into the design: "The Baltimore News Newsboys Series Prize of $1.00 to the First 35 Boys Getting Full Set of the Following:" Legend has it that the cards were given out to newsboys as an inducement to sell papers. If a newsboy could collect all 30 cards he could redeem them for $1, a princely sum for a kid in those days. If that is the case, given the fact that the cards were distributed by one newspaper, in one town, to a rather small group of kids, and redeemable for cash, no wonder these cards are nearly impossible to find today as unquestionably few survived. In all I have 17 cards (15 different) and will be listing them for bid in eBay over the next 4 months. These cards are seldom offered for sale, and if you are working on a set or simply looking for a type card, don't miss this opportunity! Shipping is a flat rate of $15.00 and includes registered delivery and insurance. The seller reserves the right to hold checks and money orders for up to 7 days to ensure clearance.
