You are bidding on a rare authentic personally owned gift from Senator Edward W. Brooke to Barbara Walters. Came from a very close friend of the Walters family in Dorchester, Ma. It is a Zippo Lighter with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts seal. Back is engraved "To Barbara With Gratitude Edward W Brooke Attorney General 1962-1964". The Zippo date codes indicate it was made in 1963. This was a lighter that was in Brooke's personal collection, something he received while serving the Commonwealth. Walters was a smoker and claimed to light one up before every big interview. Since Brooke never smoked a day in his life, he probably thought this was something Barbaera would enjoy more than he. It is in excellent condition. Guaranteed authentic. A very rare opportunity to own a piece of history, Barbara Walters revealed in her 2008 memoir that she had a passionate affair with married former former U.S. Senator Edward Brooke in the 1970's, a love affair that almost ended both their careers. When Barbara Walters met him and commenced their long-term affair in the early 1970s, Brooke was at the height of his power. At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising television news star and co-host of the "Today" show. Walters, who had established herself on "The Today Show," was on her way to becoming the first anchor of a network newscast. read more
