French, Circa 1879 Height: 4.5"Diameter: 13.5 " A beautiful rare tazza; a treasure elaborately embellished with greek characters depicting field work ( Travaux des Champs as the piece would be titled in the sculptors native tongue ). Made of bronze and copper this Neoclassical fine art item is a collectors dream find. As noted in the pictures this piece is dated 1879 and signed by F. Levillain on the face of the scene, and around the bottom edge circumferance inscribed in capitals is the artist F. Barbedienne. A similar tazza at auction can go for $2000 easily, but due to downsizing I must let this item go. The artist's work can also be found in museums as noted below a great piece guaranteed to add quality to any room. It has no visible cracks or damages and I have never used any type metal cleaner on it. A brief exerpt from Fine Art and Antiques, Adrian Alan is a worthy mention: " Ferdinand Levillain was born in Passy in 1837 and died in January 1905 in Paris. He had his debut at the Paris Salon in 1861, and won a Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. In 1892 he was recognised with the highly prestigous 'Legion d'Honneur'. Examples of his work are displayed in many museums including the 'Musée de Lyon' and the 'Musée d'Art Moderne' in Paris. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) was a highly important and prolific bronze founder of one of the most important French art foundries. He pioneered the use of mounts and, more commonly, bronze sculpture including figures and animals. Barbedienne produced catalogues of bronze reproductions of Greek and Roman classical sculpture and experimented with 'champleve' and 'cloisonne' enamels during the third quarter of the century." Exhibitions: Barbedienne's awards: Paris, 1878; 'Grand Prix', 'Grande Medaille d'Or', 'Diplome d'honneur', and 28 'Medailles de Cooperateurs' Vienna 1873; Two 'Diplomes d'Honneur', 'Medailles de Progres', and 25 'Medailles de Cooperateurs'. Paris 1867: 'Jure Rapporteur (Hors Concours)'. London 1862; Three Medals for Excellence Paris 1855; 'Grande Medaille d'Honneur'. London 1851; Two Council Medals. *May you have any questions or need additional photos feel free to send me an email and I will promptly send you a response as soon as possible. Thanks For Looking!
