Fantastic c1880 albumen cabinet card of Chang-Yu-Sing,the "Chinese Giant" one of P.T.Barnum's main circus attractions who was a finale act in the Big Top alongside Tom Thumb.He was 8 feet tall and could lift 500 lbs. with ease and was the tallest man that Americans had ever seen.A favorite of the emperors of China and Russia,Chang wore varied costumes,including a French military uniform,the full armor and dress of a Mongolian warrior,and a huge silk Mandarin robe and cap-which he's seen wearing Next to him on the photographers chair we can see an opium pipe and a fan.

Chang was 34 years old when he arrived in New York on Dec. 1,1880 which was one year ahead of the Chinese Exclusion Act which would ban immigration to the US from China for decades.He was affable and kind,smoked fine cigars,played chess,and fluently spoke seven languages.

The image was taken by the great pioneer daguerreotypist Abraham Bogardus of New York City and is autographed on back by the Chinese Giant himself.
