For auction is this fine, "Goli" mask made by artisans of the Baule ethnic group. TheBaule are an ethnic group now indigenous to Ivory Coast but originally part of the Akan ethnic group from Neighbouring Ghana who migrated to Ivory Coast led their by their Queen, Awura Pokou, who lost out against other leaders in a power struggle in the old Ashanti kingdom of Ghana. The Baules are known for fine their sculpted work which is extremely detailed, life-like and with almost an obsessive attention to detail. Their work remains very collectible and much sought-after for that reason. This is a Baule Goli mask. This abstract mask is a departure from the sculpted work the Baule are reknowned for. Use. This mask is used in dances to celebrate harvests and in ceremonies to honour important visitors and dignitaries. It may also be used at funeral cermonies for important members of the tribe. It is believed the round face of the mask represent the sun with it's life-giving power. the horns represent the mythical strenght of the Buffalo. This beautiful mask is a fine and aesthetically perfect example in great condition. It features the classic checkerboard pattern stained , with dye, in red and blue . The white background , now slightly faded with age, is achieved with ochre. The mask is 54cm high, 32cm wide and around 6cm deep. This item was read more
