Species: Fluorapatite Locality: Crystal Lode pegmatite, Fulford District, Eagle Co., Colorado Size: Miniature - 3.5 x 2.8 x 2 cm Weight: 38 g (~190 carats) Number: 0191 Details: The Crystal Lode is probably Colorado's best Apatite locality; few crystals are produced but they're so nice their fame precedes them. Not so well-known is their fluorescence. This chunky charmer has a moderate blue fluorescence under midwave UV, and an odd but very pleasant yellow-pink, like a peach, under shortwave. The blue-fluorescing Fluorapatite layer covers the outside of the crystal and seems to block some of the shortwave UV, so the peach fluorescence is best observed at the lower end where the crystal was separated from the matrix. NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET: The higher quality the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look; key factors include lamp wattage, spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. The photos here are taken using UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave. midwave, longwave-351) and Philips BLB (longwave-368) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage.
