Species: Diopside w/ pyrite in calcite
Locality: Northern Areas, Pakistan Size: Miniature/small cabinet - 5.5 x 3.3 x 2.1 cm (2-1/4 x 1-3/8 x 7/8") Notes: This material was being sold as pargasite, but it's really diopside. The color is about right, but the crystal cross-section is clearly a pyroxene rather than amphibole shape (pyroxenes have nearly square angles of 87 & 93 degrees, amphiboles are diamond-shaped at 56 & 124 degrees). It's a pretty piece whatever it is, with a delicate contrast between the crystal and matrix colors, accented by bright pyrite sparkles. If I had access to marble this attractive, I'd build a monument! BILBOBURGLAR GOES WEST... THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT Now that I'm rocking and rolling in New Mexico, I have to wait for the snow to melt in the mountains to do some prospecting around Taos.
