Greetings -- back in the saddle after a nasty little run-in with a 'maturing' body! The good news is while I was home recuperating I received a call from a lady who needed to divest of her brother's estate. He was a professor at the University of Iowa, and retired to Duluth. GREAT, and VERY eclectic collection of items. I'll begin to list these today, and be sure to check my other auctions over the next couple of weeks -- he had a great 'eye', and t were a lot of 'surprises' in my first forage through the home. This auction is for a BEAUTIFUL RookwoodRookwoodRookwoodRookwoodRookwood vase I found in the storage room. It has an incredible matte glaze with deep purples, lilacs, greens, with light accents of a pale yellow interspersed somewhat randomly with the other colors. It has a very organic/naturalistic feel to it -- the decoration almost appears to be abstract florals. The colors are very deep and rich, and my photos do not begin to represent the dimension and color depth of the piece. The vase measures 7 1/2" high, the base is 4 1/2" in diameter, and the top is 3 1/2" in diameter. A great, very simple flowing design/structure. T is no damage -- no chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs, etc. -- wonderful condition! The standard Rookwood logo is on the base with 'XXII' (1923) underneath the logo. Under the Roman numerals the number '2063' has been incised. See the close ups (and SUPERSIZE) to get a better read on the logo and marks. What I believe are the letters 'VT' have been marked in black on the bottom (under the glaze). My guess is that this is an artist 'signature' -- many Rookwood pieces were initialed/signed by the outstanding artists who worked for them. If you have an idea of what the 'VT' stand for -- I'd be very happy to hear from you. A great piece with most any decor -- from Arts and Crafts to Contemporary. An especially nice piece for pottery collectors -- again -- the very deep, rich colors and matte glaze will complement any piece(s). If you wish to insure the piece, please email me before paying, and I'll send the invoice with insurance included. I will double box this piece for shipment. T is NO RESERVE as usual, but I just wouldn't 'sit' on this one -- you know t will be last minute/second bidders. Thanks for your interest -- have a great week. Hi: I've had a couple of very generous folks who have identified the artist -- it is Vera Tischler. I've also been told the finish is called 'vellum'. Just a gorgeous piece -- one of the nicest designs, with an incredible combination of glazes/colors. Best of luck.
