BEAUTIFUL C. 1890 STANFORD'S LIBRARY MAP OF THE WORLD
This week we are pleased to offer this gorgeous antique library map. It is presented in a stunning dark slipcase stamped "Stanford's Library Map of the World on Mercator's Projection." The map itself is printed on independent rectangles of paper, then backed by a handsome linen paper. As a result, no printed paper runs over the folds, and only the linen is ever folded. Largely because of this, the map has no tears and is remarkably sturdy and resilient. The slipcover measures 1" x 7.25" x 9.75", and the map itself opens out into an impressive 68" x 38" - prefect for study or display!! This map is not only about geography; it also encompasses meteorology and astronomy! Charts indicate the movement of the sun in each hemisp, and details throughout the map mark out trade winds and monsoon patterns, with the months in which they are active. And perhaps most unusually, the map also includes British telegraphs all around the globe - an incredible glimpse into worldwide communications in the late nineteenth century! The colors are still bright and true. T is only a tiny bit of foxing, which in no way interferes with legibility. The slipcase does exhibit some wear and rubbing, as well as a tearing along one edge, but it is still a handsome and durable piece. A previous owner (perhaps the original one?) did add some discreet underlining and outlining, but it all blends in nicely. I actually didn't even notice any of it until I was photographing it! This is a beautiful piece, a real treasure for anyone interested in cartography. It would also be perfect in its original purpose, hanging in your office or library!
