A large and very rare and unusual Japanese hand held bronze incense burner. It is hand crafted and cast with bronze in the shape of a branch from a lotus flower tree. With lotus buds or pods and petals or leaves on stems which come from the handle. The larger bud opens up to hold the burning incense inside, with the smoke coming through the vented openings. The smaller bud is used to hold or keep the supply of incense. Awesome etched detail on the lotus buds and leaves. Superior craftmanship overall. This burner was probably used for ceremony in a temple. It is very old dating to the early 19th century Edo period Japan (1603 - 1867). Good original condition, unfortunately missing two of the lotus petals or leaves. The two pods need to be re-soldered or welded as well, as to be expected from an older item, which was used regularly. It measures: 19" long x 7 1/2" wide x 3" deep. A nice rich patina on this bronze sculpture and an elegant design, a museum quality collectible. Please email me if you have any questions.
