Splendid turn-of-the-century Japanese two-sectioned choba- dansu or merchant chest tansu, Late Meiji period, 1890-1910. Traditionally used by shop merchants to store valuable goods or documents, account books and paper goods. To impress the customers, these were always well designed and constructed of fine, sturdy materials. This stunning golden cedar and cypress wood example features a varied design both in configuration and storage spaces. Elegant construction features an overwhelming abundance of large and roomy cupboards and drawers, offering generous and varied storage options. Includes roomy paneled cupboard area at top, hinged and paneled cupboards below and a myriad of drawers adorned with appealing ironwork. Traditional cylindrical hirute-style drawer- pulls and finely crafted, uniform lockplates. Fabulous metalwork adorning lower cabinet door, and charming bracketing throughout. A truly beautiful work of fine merchant tansu craftsmanship. The multitude of separate storage areas lends this chest to the practical, organized storage merchant tansu are known for. Pieces may be stacked as desired or displayed separately. A stunning piece, for artful display and clever, practical storage. Very good condition. Dimensions: 68.75" high, 72" wide, 19.25" deep.
