Late Victorian Figured Walnut Vanity Box The grain of the walnut veneer combined with the high gloss finish, make this a particularly striking piece. Confident of attracting admiring glances, this item promises quality and does not fail to deliver. Measuring approximately 12" x 9" x 7", it is in good condition, excepting the effect of a blow to the back corner which has caused some cracking to the veneer and slightly damaged the corner itself. Otherwise t are only those marks that might be expected from an item of this age and nothing to detract from its overall handsome appearance. Given the striking effect of the graining, the only other decoration needed for the outside of the box is a brass coloured escutcheon and a cartouche which has a monogram. Opening the lid, one notices first of all the original working lock and key; next the original hinges, still in good condition; and thirdly the makers plate for "Mechi & Bazin. Makers. London" who were known to be trading from the middle of the 19 th Century. Dating the box itself is confusing because, while most of the containers have silver plated tops, the two perfume bottles have silver screw tops hallmarked probably for London 1864. However, although they fit their spaces perfectly, and are complete with their glass stoppers and star bases, they might be replacements for the originals. The two covers have mother of pearl knobs and t are various manicure items including a small penknife, also with mother of pearl sides. The tray lifts out to reveal a storage well and t is additional storage accessed by lifting the original brass pin to allow the jewellery drawer to spring out. you will find silk and velvet lined sections designed for rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches. It is a joy to see an item, such as this, in this condition and with so much of its original fittings still in place. Postage and packing will be $26 to UK and $63 to USA.
