An absolutely gorgeous deep amethyst or purple colored cylinder whiskey bottle that we dug from an 1890 privy pit. J.T.S.BROWN & SONS DISTILLERS LOUISVILLE,KY. (in bold letters on shoulder).....hand blown....round...10 3/4"tall x only 2 5/8"round (smaller than normal).....Excellent Condition with no chips or damage of any kind. Shiny clean with only a bit of light inside haze. This is one of the prettiest amethyst whiskey bottles I've ever had! The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so donâe(tm)t turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight.
