After completing an apprenticeship with Eli Terry in Bristol, Connecticut, Seth Thomas went into business for himself, making wood works mantle clocks. Later, he incorporated brass movements into his clocks and in 1865, the town name (Plymouth) was changed to THOMASTON in honor of this American Pioneer clockmaker. The nearly perfect label inside the clock includes the Thomaston, Connecticut designation. The reverse- painted lower door glass is also original and in an excellent state of preservation...(see photograph). The 30 hour brass mechanism is clean and running well, keeping good time and striking the hours properly on a melodious coil gong. I especially admire the bold grain pattern on the wood case. The dial includes those somewhat enigmatic initials "ESJ" (see photograph). These stand for the name E. J. Swiggart who was a dial maker/printer in Cincinnati, Ohio. Many antique American clocks are found with his initials on the dial (face). Overall, this clock almost rates MINT. I'd give it that rating except for the fact that I hardly ever do...in order to avoid any possible criticism from a prospective buyer who might discover a fly speck somewhere on the case!! Anyway, it's a REALLY attractive and appealing example of Seth Thomas' clock manufacturing in Thomaston, Connecticut.
