This beautiful little box was purchased near Zuni Pueblo f rom the back rooms of a pawn shop more than a decade ago. Its due date was up, which I suppose makes it, very legitimately, âeoedead pawn.âe The channel inlay, for which Zuni silversmiths are legend, is as simple and elegant as the box beneath it. T is a single-initial hallmark signature, âeoeR,âe on the bottom. The pill box measures 2 inches long, 1 1/2 inches wide and 1/4 inch deep. Zuni silversmiths are famous for their inlay stonework, in which the stones are worked and then fit together, sometimes side by side (called stone-to-stone), or with individual silver channels in between each stone (channel inlay as you see Zuni silversmiths do not cast their silver but fabricate each piece with meticulous care. In traditional Zuni inlay, the stones most often used are turquoise, red coral, black jet or onyx, and white mother of pearl. The turquoise represents Father Sky, the red, Mother Earth. The black and the white of the other stones represent the dualities and opposites of nature and life itself. Other stones used by Zuniâe(tm)s jewelers include orange and purple spiny oyster, pink coral, green snail shell, abalone, melon shell, and fossilized ivory. Please email me with any questions.
