Lawrence Bell (1894-1956) left high school at the age of sixteen to follow his brother into the airplane industry. (His brother died an early barnstormer.) Two years later, he became shop foreman of the Glenn L. Martin Company. He quickly excelled at Martin, becoming vice president and general manager by 1925. He left soon after to join Consolidated Aircraft and work under Reuben Fleet as Consolidated's general manager. He worked at Consolidated for seven years, but when the company moved to California in 1935, he stayed behind, instead forming the Bell Aircraft Corporation with Ray Whitman and Charles Beard, two Consolidated colleagues. Bell produced thousands and thousands of fighter aircraft for WW2, tens of thousands of gun mounts and was a top American producer during the war. Larry Bell was the driving force behind it all. When he died in 1956, Bell was never the same. Larry's mark on aviation and helicopter history is unmatched.
