This Irish Belleek Anchorite Candlestick is quite scarce and very desirable. The detailing is outstanding and the glaze has the typical almost iridescent early Belleek quality. The delicate shell and coral motif is wonderful and typical of early Belleek craftsmanship. The piece stands 3.5" tall and is 7 inches in diameter. T are no cracks or restoration. T is a small less than 1mm wide chip in the top edge of the candle holder, and is shown in one of the pictures. It is minor and as collectors are aware, typical of fragile Belleek pieces. The piece is marked with the Belleek 1st Black Mark, which dates it between 1863 and 1890. Additionally, it has the impressed "Belleek Co. Fermanagh" mark. It is pictured in the standard reference work by Degenhardt 1st ed., D349.
This piece comes from a truely world-class Southern California Belleek collection, assembled in the 1960's through the early 1980's. It is one of many, many pieces that will be sold. The owners of this collection focused on rare and unusual pieces largely from the 1st and 2nd mark period, which is generally acknowledged to be Belleek's finest work. This is a keystone piece for the advanced Belleek collector. It may be some time before another copy of this piece comes on the market again.
