This stunning piece is the work of well known North Carolina artist and potter, Ben Owen III, whose potting lineage goes back to 1756. His late grandfather, Ben Owen Sr. was known for melding elements of Asian ceramics with the sturdy style of his forebears. Ben Owen III's Chinese Blue glaze has become one of his signature and most collectable glazes. T are different hues of blue and red depending on the firing and glaze application. Variations occur from firing to firing. No two pieces come out exactly alike. The color is made from several mixtures of copper in a glaze and fired to 2250 degrees Fahrenheit. This glaze was first produced by Jacque Busbee and Ben Owen Sr. (Ben III's grandfather) while working at Jugtown Pottery in the 1930's. A few notable collectors of Ben's work are Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor and former North Carolina Governor, Jim Hunt. This piece is called a "bell" vase. The piece is approximately 7.25" tall and 5" wide at the vase's mid section. The opening of the vase is approximately 6" in diameter from inner rim to rim. The piece is signed and dated on the bottom, "Ben Owen III 2006". This is a very beautiful and unique piece due to the fact that it was twice fired. Wood kiln fired first (as with all Ben's Chinese Blue), then it received a second gas kiln firing. This causes the glaze to take on a beautiful greenish/blue hue and it is more shiny than other Chinese Blue pieces. It also caused the glaze to take on an almost "opalescent" effect on this particular piece. This piece was acquired direct from the potter and is in mint condition. You may notice some glare from the sunlight in some of the photos. I wanted to photograph this piece in natural light so that you can see the true colors of the piece. The blue and green hues with touches of red are absolutely stunning! Please email me with any questions. Thanks for looking!
