Ben Owen Sr. (1904 - 1983) was one of the great North Carolina potters. He was one of the earliest potters at Jugtown in the Seagrove area of North Carolina. The "BEN OWEN MASTER POTTER" stamp on this egg vase dates from the 1960's or very early 1970's when Owen later operated his own shop near Seagrove. He also employed the renowned potter Ferrell Craven (son of Daniel Craven and grandson of J. D. Craven) at this location.
This Ben Owen Master Potter egg vase is glazed in the same popular Chinese white (also known as Opaque white) glaze that was also used back in the earlier Jugtown days. The glaze has that frothy thick "cake-frosting"-type appearance that is so attractive as it drapes down the vase. The book "North Carolina Pottery: The Collection of the Mint Museums" edited by Barbara Stone Perry has a group of Ben Owen egg vases photograped on page 149, and the accompanying text notes that "these egglike shapes were a favorite of Ben Owen's and were made in a number of sizes and glazes; they were inspired by ancient Chinese forms". This egg vase stands 4 5/8 inches tall with a maximum width of about 3 1/4 inches. The vase is in superb condition with no cracks, chips, or hairline fractures and just some of the tiny glaze pops and glaze bubbles that one always sees in this frothy glaze. The base of the piece is impressed with the circular "Ben Owen Master Potter" stamp (see photo). A top-notch example of the Chinese white glaze on a popular form; offered with no reserve and an extremely low opening bid. I accept personal checks, money orders, and PayPal. T will be a $9 shipping charge for delivery by fully insured UPS Ground or USPS, and the egg vase will be carefully bubble-wrapped and double-boxed to ensure safe delivery. I will contact the winning bidder by e-mail shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Good luck!
