Ben Owen Sr. (1904 - 1983) was one of the great North Carolina potters. He was one of the earliest potters at Jugtown in the Seagrove area of North Carolina. The "BEN OWEN MASTER POTTER" stamp on this sugar and creamer dates from the 1960's or very early 1970's when Owen later operated his own shop near Seagrove. He also employed the renowned potter Ferrell Craven (son of Daniel Craven and grandson of J. D. Craven) at this location. This Ben Owen Master Potter sugar and creamer set is glazed in the popular "tobacco spit" glaze that was also used back in the earlier Jugtown days. The dome-topped lidded sugar in this set is the type of piece that always attracts attention with its nearly round shape and its attractive handles and lid. The finely crafted creamer stands about 3 3/4 inches tall while the sugar container stands about 4 3/4 inches tall to the top of the lid's finial. Both pieces are in superb original condition with no cracks, chips, or hairline fractures (t are some bright areas in the photos, including a camera flash spot that appears toward the center of the sugar in some photos, that are caused by reflections off the glossy glaze). It is really unlikely that this pair was used for anything but display over the years, as t is not even the slightest sign of wear w the lid rests on the sugar container. The base of each read more
