Arnold and Andre: An Historical Drama by George H. Calvert. Published in 1864 by Little, Brown and Company, Boston. First edition (same year on copyright and title page, no additional printings listed). This 4.5 X 7 in., 95 page, brown cloth hardcover contains a three act play involving the turncoat Major General Arnold and the British spy, Major Andre (later hanged by the Continental Army for assisting Arnold in attempting to surrender West Point to the British). The playwright discusses how this is "a favorable time for the publication of a work that embodies the first American treason, now that our national life has been ... assailed by ... the most wicked treason known to history (i.e. the Civil War). This episode in history is made all the more relevant today by the television series, Turn .The book is in good condition. I doubt a dustjacket was issued. There is light rubbing/fading/staining of the boards. Gilt spine titles are still distinct. Spine ends are frayed, and the board corners bumped and rubbed. Endpapers are intact, but appear to have oxidized from their original golden brown to green. Foxing stains on many pages, but pages are unmarked. The binding is very secure: nothing is loose or missing. This is not a library discard.Rare, first edition of this unusual work.Shipping is FREE within the continental USA, or contact read more
