Up for auction is a heavy metal casket-shaped box made by the Benedict Viking Silver Co. measuring 6-7/8" long x 4-1/2" deep x 3-1/2" high. The box has some condition issues: the lid is scratched, the hinge has been soldered and t are some chipped edges, but it still has an amazing art nouveau design that may allow someone to overlook these flaws. I would think the hinge should be easy enough to repair since solder can be so easily melted and someone might be able to do a better repair job than was previously done. Some of the photographs are slightly blurry because it was easier to capture the design on this shiny surface without using the flash. The domed lid shows a Norse viking ship at sea with the sun and its rays extending out from the left. This entire scene is surrounded by intertwined sea serpents all around the edge of the lid. The feet of the box flare gracefully outward with the sea serpent pattern repeated on each side. The base of the box is covered in tiny stars with a central maker's mark which reads Benedict Viking Silver Co. 1962. I am sure this is a model number and not a year of manufacture. The sides are patterned but the back of the box is not. The front of the box again shows a Norse or Viking sailing ship at sea. The box is not perfect but it is certainly beautiful. Thanks for looking.
