A Bengal Atlas; Containing Maps of the Theatre of War andCommerce on that side of Hindoostan. Published in 1780 in both quarto and folio formats, the majority of the print run is said to have perished at sea en route from Britain to India, with only a few surviving copies. This copy is in the unrestored, original mottled calf binding, ruled in decorative gilt, raised bands and original title label. 13 engraved maps, many outlined by hand in color, plus an index map. Many double page, the rest folding. Some natural toning to heavy rag pages. There is a crease evident on a few of the maps, but in general the maps are carefully preserved. A few small stub tears. Some creasing along the lower foredge corner of title and subsequent page. Previous owners’ names on front endpaper. Previous owner indicated that the original owner was member of a family in England named Wilkes, and book has been passed down through this military family. Two short inscriptions on top of front free endpaper. Original binding generally well preserved. There is some splitting along joints, corners and spine ends heavily read more
