BENJAMIN FREETH, SHEFFIELD BRACE, 1818 - 1820 These early Sheffield braces that are signed are quite rare. When the very few are found today, they are not in good condition. Not so with the one being offered. It has a tight chuck with a good working spring-button. The head turns easily and has very little slop. (In this time period they did not have brass side plates.) Benjamin Freeth was noted as a Birmingham brace maker, 1818 - 1820. A similar brace is in the Farmer's Museum, Cooperstown, NY and has the same body and head profiles as this brace. Both show nicks and some light dents, but no splits. This brace is a solid (almost 200 year-old) tool. A real collectible!! ---- Overall - 14 3/4" , Throw - 3".I will ship this brace International.
