The Bergdoll family became well-known through the Louis Bergdoll and Sons Brewing Co., founded in 1849 by Louis Bergdoll, a German immigrant. During its peak operating period, the Bergdoll brewery produced one of the most popular beers in the country. In spite of Prohibition, the company did not actually dissolve until 1951, when the Bergdoll building at 29th and Parrish Streets was sold. The Bergdoll estates were valued at several million dollars.* The Bergdoll & Psotta Brewery was built on 29th Street in the 1870’s. The Bergdoll family became very wealthy making beer. The brownstone mansion at 22nd and Green Streets was the family’s home for many years. Grover C. Bergdoll, son of the founder, spent his time flying planes, racing cars and chasing women. When the U.S. started drafting men into the service during the First World War, Grover asked to be assigned as a flight instructor. The government turned him down, and Mr. Bergdoll disappeared, refusing to enter the military. He was eventually found and arrested in 1920.
