Chair History: Harry Bertoia's 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including the exquisite Bertoia side wire chair and later toddler's chair. Innovative, comfortable, and handsome, the chair's delicate appearance bellies it's strength and durability. In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them." The wire chairs are among the most successful and recognizable children's designs from the 20 th century. These were manufactured by Knoll Associates of New York, beginning as the adult version 420C in 1950-1952. Even more amazing is information contained in the book 1000 Chairs by Taschen: "Bertoia's designs not only addressed functional requirements but were also studies in form and space. Mechanized production was attempted but is was found that the chairs were easier to produce by hand." Table History: Isamu Noguchi, son of an American writer and Japanese poet, worked in Brancusi's atelier in Paris before embarking on his own diverse career. Noguchi's classic mid-centry Cyclone Table was originally drawn in 1953 as a stool (the rocking stool), but Noguchi altered the production to be a child's table to coordinate with the Harry Bertoia chairs produced by Knoll. The center support allows several children to sit around the table and the heavy wood base makes the laminate top a stable surface for work and play. Noguchi showed a fascination with the formal qualities of structure, as is seen in this piece. Specifications: Table: Overall good condition with normal wear and tear for it's age.
