One of the most beautiful, radiant Green Tara thangkas that I have ever seen!!! Extremely beautiful face and the colors are stunning! Fairly simple and uncluttered composition. The photos describe it and show the quality better than I can in words! Everything in it is done to as close to perfection as can be. Also in a large size! Painted in Kathmandu, Nepal. Unfortunately I was not able to get the name of the artist on this one. It was not in the notes that I took when I bought it at the best artist's co-op at Boudanath in Nepal. Don't judge the quality of a thangka by whether the artist is known or not, or if it is signed or not. It is only recently that some artist's have begun to sign their works of sacred art in response to what is done in the West, and an increasing market of Westerners. It is also a misconception (promoted by an eBay seller or two) that an artist who has "Lama" in his name is a monk or a monastic. This is not the case. The majority of Newari, Tamang, and Sherpa artists in the Kathmandu Valley have taken the name "Lama" themselves or been named that by their thangka painting school.

Please note that the bottom of the brocade in photo #3 looks irregular but this is due to t not being a bottom rod in it and it is rippled a little. With the rod in it, the bottom is quite straight. The last photo shows the decorative metal ends on another thangka. The bottom rod with ends is included with this thangka. Large size!!! The painting alone measures about 19 & 1/2 inches wide by 26 & 1/4 inches tall. With brocade it is about 53 inches tall by 37 inches wide, including the rod with ends.

Tara is actually the generic name for a set of Buddhas or bodhisattvas of similar aspect. These may more properly be understood as different aspects of the same quality, as bodhisattvas are often considered metaphoric for Buddhist virtues.

The most widely known forms of Tara are:

Green Tara, known as the Buddha of enlightened activity White Tara, also known for compassion, long life, healing and serenity; also known as The Wish-fulfilling Wheel, or Cintachakra Red Tara, of fierce aspect associated with magnetizing all good things Black Tara, associated with power Yellow Tara , associated with wealth and prosperity Blue Tara , associated with transmutatio of anger Cittamani Tara, a form of Tara widely practiced at the level of Highest Yoga Tantra in the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, portrayed as green and often conflated with Green Tara Khadiravani Tara (Tara of the teak forest), who appeared to Nagarjuna in the Khadiravani forest of South India and who is sometimes referred to as the "22nd Tara ."

T is also recognition in some schools of Buddhism of twenty-one Taras . A practice text entitled " In Praise of the 21 Taras ", is recited during the morning in all four sects of Tibetan Buddhism.

The main Tara mantra is Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha (pronounced sometimes as "Om Tare Tu Tare Ture Soha").

Supplication to Tara

Sublime and noble Lady, with your retinue,

Please regard us with compassion, free of thought,

Bless me so the objectives of my prayer

May be unobstructedly fulfilled.

May the Buddhaâe(tm)s teachings spread and flourish!

May its holders live in harmony and good health!

May obstacles that threaten them subside!

May their activities of teaching and practice prosper!

May sickness and famine, fighting and strife all recede!

May spiritual richness increase even further!
