Delightful Beatrix Potter Beswick Figurine "Mrs. Tiggy Winkle" Purchase this delightful character from the story, "The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle" and bring the story alive for a special child in your life (or the child that still lives in you!). And is an interesting bit of knowledge: t is a wonderful wildlife hospital in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, England, by the name of St. Tiggywinkles. Yes, the hospital was named in honor of the hedgehog made famous by Beatrix Potter! You may recall that the little girl in the story (Lucie) is in search of the handkerchiefs she is always misplacing. Her search finally brings her to Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle who works wonders with her washing and ironing skills. Lucie is impressed and grateful until she realizes that Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is just an ordinary brown and prickly hedgehog. (As a child I never saw any problem with Lucie's attitude, but as an adult, I am so NOT thrilled. Like Lucie, my 14-year old showed a decided lack of appreciation for my efforts with the laundry, which is why his assigned chore is now doing the laundry all by himself.) Now about this unusual wildlife hospital: Tiggywinkles specializes in treating injured hedghogs, badgers, foxes, and wild birds. They even take in injured frogs and toads! About 10,000 animals are treated annually at no charge. The hospital grounds also house the world's first (and only) Hedgehog Memorabilia Museum. When you consider that one hedgehog will eat its weight in insects each day, you can begin to see why farmers and avid gardeners prize these small creatures.
