In its present form, this is a new handmade tool by Oklahoma knife and tool maker Bill Goodwin . It was hand ground from one solid piece of vintage 19th century high carbon steel then carefully hand polished, leaving most of its original patina. The tool has a fluted hexagon shape. It shows age and use from its previous life with a genuine patina. It measures 10 3/8" long. Fully hardened. It is etched with my makers mark, "BG". The pommel is box elder burl wood with a green fiber spacer. Comes with a custom handmade 7-8 ounce wet fit leather belt sheath. The sheath has multiple colored stitching and four decorative, all metal, Diablo concho's with an antique finish. The sheath is treated with mink oil to protect, preserve and waterproof the leather. Newly made and unused in it's present condition. Reclaimed and recycled into another useful tool for modern days uncertainties. Great for emergency situations.
Vintage steel is often of a higher quality than present day steel, it has less impurities, being made from virgin, superior ores that can no longer be mined because the deposits have been depleted. The forging or casting, grinding and finishing of these old tools was done by a more human, hands-on process.
