+ The Bennet/Murray Family Bible of Syracuse & Rochester + HOLY BIBLE + Containing the OLD and NEW TESTAMENTS: together with THE APOCRYPHA: Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. with Cann's Marginal Notes and References. to which are added an Index; an Alphabetical Table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their Significations, tables of Scripture weights, measures, and coins, &c. + BUFFALO: PUBLISHED BY FINNEY & CO. 1851. + Demy Quarto, textblock 11" x 9"; binding 11.5" x 9.5". Bound in full burgundy calf, with covers gently blindstamped in a less~encountered variety of geometric and floral pattern. Spine with gently raised bands, the compartments double~ruled at borders, enclosing fine & graceful floral toolings; textblock edges once marbled, but now faded ~ or rubbed off with loving use. With seven full~page plates, and a geneology page. + We call the plates quaint because the Egyptian princesses are dressed in rawther Dickensian or Currier & Ives fashion...as well as certain others in the plates & tThe text is printed double~column, with marginal notations. The Apocrypha are placed between the Old & New Testaments. The Geneology page is 2/3 filled with death notices dating to Irene Bennet, 1853. Enclosed is a card once affixed to the free endpaper which states: "In case of my death this bible to go back into the Bennet family ~ Cora Murray" "Sorry Cora they all died ~ so mother said ~ Bertha Willis" "+ so did you + I am next / Boo Hoo" + CONDITION Binding firm and solid as a rock. No loose pages or signatures, NO sagging of textblock at the top. Textblock tips worn to a soft curve. Paper is perfectly flexible & readable, with that peculiar and hard-to-describe "warping" quality the makes for such a wonderful experience when flipping through the text...Endpapers are toned at the edges from the leather turn-ins; otherwise free of defects. Leather boards show a few notable scratches to front cover, with many other lesser nicks and nits. Back cover is remarkably clean, showing only one tiny dent and one 2" hairline scratch. All board edge areas show rubbing and wear to upper surface layer of leather ~ long since redyed burgundy by an unknown hand. THE SPINE IS REMARKABLY UNTOUCHED. HEAD & TAIL ALL T Only the faintest flexure hairlines can be seen along the vertical central portion. The gilding has mellowed to a deep rich tone approaching copper at the outermost compartments. The hinges are the main point: they have been flexed to the point of flaking, but absolutely still holding on strong; the inner leather is still good. NO worry now, or for the next several years, but a strip of Japanese mending tissue to each hinge down the road will insure a continued long life for this binding. We have taken the liberty in the past to apply a treatment of British Museum leather dressing to the binding ~ especially the hinges. HOWEVER, that having been said, we must point your attention to the bottom 2" portion of the rear hinge, shown in a less-than-perfect close-up. Being the rear hinge, it has little occasion to be flexed; but over time it will slowly and insidiously creep its way up the hinge, so be advised!
