Offered is a rare and desirable complete example of an Elizabethan Geneva (or âeoeBreechesâe) Bible in English, with woodcut illustrations and four woodcut maps, printed at London in quarto by Christopher Barker in 1595. The Bible is bound with a Sternhold and Hopkins Psalter in rhyming verse with music printed in 1597, the two works bound in 17th century blindstamped (paneled) calf. This copy is in roman type and contains Tomsonâe(tm)s revised New Testament. Along with the woodcuts, the completeness of the Bible makes this a desirable copy. Both the general title and the New Testament title are present, along with the title for the âeoeSecond Part of the Bible.âe The presence of the general title is particularly notable; it is very frequently lacking in Bibles of this vintage. If t was a title for the Apocrypha, it has been excised (the pagination skips from 127 to 129 w the leaf would have been). The only fault in the Bibleâe(tm)s collation is that two leaves from a 16th century black letter Geneva Bible have been substituted for 3G (text complete). Concerning the Geneva Bible itself, first, it was by far the most popular English translation of the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th; it was the translation read by Shakespeare, Donne, Knox, Bunyan and Cromwell.
