Bicentennial LIBERTY BELL Replica WhiteChapel Foundry Limited Ed. 1970 Vintage~DESCRIPTION ~ This wonderful bell was produced for the The Liberty Bell Foundation of Boston, Massachusetts by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry of London, England, the foundry which cast the original liberty bell in 1752. Made to the original designs of that foundry for the Liberty Bell cast there in 1752, this limited edition 1/ 5th scale model replica, is one of the 2,400 numbered and registered commemorative edition bells produced between 1968-1976 . Approx 300 bells were produced each years which makes this one ( Number 882) circa 1970's . As seen by the copy of an original order form from an ad in the 1981 Rotarian Magazine, the bells were very expensive and came in 4 finishes, Black metal, polished bronze, silver and gold. I believe this to be the more expensive and rarer gold finish although it is possible it is the polished bronze. It does not have the reddish cast you would expect from bronze though. I do not have the original paperwork that came with this bell however in the 2 page ad, it is states that the bells have already increased in price due to inflation and the cost of precious medals which leads me to believe if it is the gold version, it may be plated or gold vermeil over a heavy cast metal. The plaque on back reads " The Papa George". This one was requested at time of order by original owner. Measuring approx. 15 1/2" tall with the wood base measuring 13" square, the bell weighs approx. 27 pounds unpackaged . Great vintage condition. There is some minor surface scratches and minor spotting to bell indicative of age. I did not try to polish or clean. Has an amazing ring to it. I have found one other of these bells for sale online (in the black finish) and the asking price is more than 10 times my starting bid! Really a wonderful piece of America's History.
