Matchlessantiques is offering smiths and collectors this Big 300 lb. BLACK JACK (Hay Budden) Blacksmith anvil that was made in Brooklyn, New York. This anvil was made for J.E. Pilcher of Simmons Hardware Co. of St. Louis, Mo. The hardware companies trademark name was "BLACK JACK". Although the trademark is not real clear, you can make out enough to identify this anvil as a Black Jack. What is unusual is that the anvil looks as though the Black Jack trademark was stamped on top of the regular Hay Budden trademark. This is especially evident because of the bottom line that reads, "BROOKLYN, NY". The middle line you can see parts of "MANUFACTURING CO." and parts of "SOLID WROUGHT". The only part that is not real clear is the top line, you can barely make out the name Black Jack, and I don't see any of Hay Budden. Below the trademark the anvil is stamped "300" for the weight. This Hay Budden has the normal inspectors mark under the horn, and serial numbers are in the proper place. The serial number on this anvil, "128139" indicate that this anvil was manufactured in 1907. If you are looking for a bigger anvil to work on, this would make an excellent anvil for the shop. The face does have some use marks and the edges has a couple larger chips on one side. T is a hairline crack by one chip, but the anvil still rings fine indicating that the plate is not loose. The anvils face is not as hard as normal and the anvil has a good rebound. This Hay Budden is marked with the inspectors mark, a number "8" under the horn. Please take a close look at the pictures. According to Richard Postman's book "Anvils in America" this Solid Wrought Iron anvil was the first style anvil Hay Budden made and is considered the most attractive style produced. It has a shorter waist and doesn't look as top heavy as later styles. This anvil was made from the best American Wrought Iron and faced with the best Crucible Cast Steel plate. Postman's book also states that Hay Buddens were considered the best American made anvil. Hay Budden claims they used the best material available and were produced by the finest American craftsmen. It is still considered the Rolls Royce of blacksmith anvils and is one of the most sought after anvils today. This anvil would make any blacksmith's day. It's a really great looking anvil and will be an excellent addition to any collection or shop. Don't miss this anvil, you won't be disappointed. I guarantee your satisfaction or your money back, shipping not included. Measurements are: overall length 33 5/8", face 5 1/4" x 20 5/8", horn 13", hardie hole 1 3/8", pritchel hole 13/16", height 13", base 12 1/8" X 13 1/2", actual weight 298 lb. BEFORE BUYING AN ANVIL, CONSIDER THIS : From first hand experience I have found that old anvils can have problems hidden under years of built up rust or paint. These problems can include cracks, repairs, hammer marks, defects and even bondo or body putty. Most of the time even the sellers are not aware of these faults because they sell the anvils as found and do not clean them. This results in some buyers being surprised with problems after paying hundreds of dollars for what they thought was a "good" anvil. Even worse, the buyer may find out the anvil was sold with no guarantee. To prevent this from happening to our customers, we clean our anvils thoroughly to detect any faults and describe them accurately when we place them for sale. Matchlessantiques can confidently assure our customers that they can forget the worry and get what they pay for when buying from us. We offer a money back satisfaction guarantee on all anvils, less the shipping costs. Buy your anvils wisely and get what you pay for for when buying from us.
