This is a beautiful sterling silver Antique Victorian circa 1890 Scottish, fossil, Whitby jet and malachite brooch.PLEASE NOTE: The brooch has no hinge on the back where the pin would have fitted into. The brooch has a pin but this has been fixed through a small hole in the silver side. I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found. The superb gemstones used for this brooch are green malachite from Africa, black whitby jet, and grey fossils from Crail in Fife. The back is also made from Whitby jet. PLEASE NOTE: There are some minor cracks and a few small chips all commensurate with this very old piece. The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for brooches of this period, but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The length is 4.6 cm and the pin and C clasp are in working condition although the pin is not original and very loose as it has been fixed through a hole in the side. Please see close up picture for details of this.
