These are the famous "Buddy" bookends. Maybe you remember reading about the history of the first seeing eye guide dog for the blind, down in New Jersey, in the 1920's. It is a great story and they found german shepherd dogs to be the best ones, intelligent and responsive and easily trained. Well, the first seeing eye dog was donated to the school and was called "KISS". His blind partner thought that sounded foolish so he renamed him buddy. The famous illustrator and artist McClelland Barclay designed an original pair of bronze bookends to be sold to benefit the Seeing Eye Foundation and he made them a sculpture of Buddy, the seeing eye dog. you go, the "Buddy" bookends. Notice how the eyes almost look empty, that is deliberate on behalf of the artist to reference the blind school. These are big and impressive, measuring just 7inches high by six and a half deep and five wide. They weigh 6 pounds the pair and they are in very nice shape. . These are heavy pot metal with a very heavy copper gilded bronze coat. The finish and size are wonderful. They are a real coppery red gold, deep and rich. They say BUDDY on one side of the base. Then they say THE ORIGINAL SEEING EYE DOG FOR THE BLIND on the back of the base. They are fully figural or three dimensional so they display well from any angle. These are just so rare.
