Up for auction is a lot of 33 different items of ephemera from the July 23, 1952 departure of a passenger on the SS United States, leaving New York for Le Havre, and return a trip in October. This must have been just the second or third trip for the record-breaking cruiseliner - its initial voyage was July 3, 1952 after two years of construction. The passenger - Virginia, traveling with her sister-in-law Maria, were on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe, spending 3 months in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland. Included in the lot are some super nifty items - it appears Virginia saved quite a few things - some of which were attached to an album page, but all are in good-very good condition. In the lot is a cabin class passenger list; a fold-out 8-page"Passenger Accommodation Plan" deck plan with many details about theship; some photos of Virginia on the ship; a berthing card and a table "early sitting" ticket; a passenger fare brochure outlining the dates and fare/cabin options (looks like Virginia paid around $200 for one way); 4 newspapers published on the SS United States on the return trip, reporting the news of the day in October (nearing the election of Eisenhower); an article clipped from what I think was a LIFE magazine featuring the launching of the SS United States, with a 3-page foldout showing a cutaway of the read more
