Big size Kimchi Hangari red clay jar by potter Korean traditional way Onggi(earthenware) jars, vessels, bowls, and various other items are being baked in traditional Korean kiln with firewood. Onggi, or earthenware, has special meaning for the Korean people. Their favorite, Gimchi, pickled vegetable with hot pepper, is the staple food item of the Korean people for the past several millennia of years together with Doenjang and Gochujang(fermented soybean paste and hot sauce), which are taken with rice. These two staples foods and a lot of others, like soybean sauce, are all stored in various types and of the earthen jars in Korea. The Onggi(earthen jars) are so made as to "breath" like human beings although they are all waterproof. They let in and out the air so that the Gimchi and soybean pastes will ferment in them properly. This is recreated by potter with the Korean traditional way.
