The story of the Binion silver hoard is truly stranger than fiction. Lonnie "Ted" Binion grew up in casinos - his family owned the famous Horseshoe Casino, the legendary "off the strip" home of the World Series of Poker. Teddy was taught at a young age to distrust paper currency - as he said, "A dollar bill was a questionable paper promise printed by politicians." Because of his family's business, Binion had near unlimited access to silver coinage. Binion began to hoard silver coinage in the 60s and continued for more than 35 years. He stored his coins in the Horseshoe's basement - an "inconvenient" location after Binion was banned by the Nevada Gaming Commission from entering his casino on corruption charges. To secure his 46,000 pounds of silver, Binion arranged an underground vault to be constructed by a trusted friend, Rick Tabish. In a tragic twist, Tabish and Binion's girlfriend, Sandra Murphy, secretely plotted to murder Ted Binion just days after moving the silver into the underground vault. They were later arrested in 1999 and convicted with the murder of Ted Binion. This collection of half dollars was recovered from the famous Binion Hoard. It contains a 1907 Barber Half Dollar, 1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, 1963 Franklin Half Dollar and two Kennedy Half Dollars 1964-1968 This set is
