We found this wonderful little birds eye maple box in Nova Scotia in 2004. We were attracted to the delightful small size (7.5 inches wide, 4.5 inches high and deep), original finish, hardware and condition, as well as the birds eye figures peeking through the original green wash stain all over the box. We have seen a few nearly identical boxes in Maine and since there were, literally, 100s of coastal schooners trading along the Maine and Maritime coasts in the 19th century, we think the box could be either American or Canadian. Based on similar boxes seen in Canadian and Maine museums, as well as a nearly identical example in Smith, Smith and Wells's seminal reference on Canadian antiques "Collecting Canada's Past" (page 94), we date this sweet little box at circa 1850. The inside of the lid bears the signature of "Olive Browne." We're sure that any collector of fine antique wooden boxes, woodenware and folk art would find this little box to be a delightful acquisition. Condition Report: Overall historical condition is excellent. The green wash stain is completely intact, with only two small areas of dark staining on the front, and what appears to be a 1 inch cigarette burn on the lid.
