John Birge and Ambrose Peck were in the clockmaking business from 1849-1859 in Bristol, Connecticut. Birge retired in 1855 to take up farming which he always loved. The company later merged with the J.C. Brown Clock Company of Bristol and after several further buy-outs became the Sessions Clock Company. This handsome triple decker clock bears a gold eagle on the crown. The magnificent bird has been repaired at some point in his lifetime and is now solid and well attached to the case. The Fen glasses (the name of a famous 19th Century artist), in the lower two sections of the case are in excellent condition (the middle glass may be a more recent restoration). A clean eight-day brass movement runs well and strikes the hours on a majestic sounding coil gong. On the label inside the clock there is a wonderful old steam engine that can't be seen in our photograph, but adds to the charm of the old clock. At this price, it ought to sell quickly to a knowlegeable clock buyer.
