Offering for auction, terra cotta tobacco jar featuring the image of a dandy black American gentleman wearing a large top hat, waistcoat and fancy turquoise scarf wrapped around his neck. He is holding a box of matches appearing to be removing one to right his cigar which is displayed in his mouth. He stands 7 1/2" tall and is marked on the base with the impressed factory marks - JM 3226. Johann Maresch was one of the more prolific and now desirable potters that created tobacco jars in the late 1800's in what is now the western end of the Czech Republic. Considering the age, the jar is in great condition. T is some wear to the paint and t is an old tiny (1/8") flake on the front edge of the hat. In addition, as seen in the photos, t is an old chip on the bottom edge of his shoulders and a subsequent 1" hairline running down to the botton edge of the top. The chip was obviously done from the constant lifting and dropping the lid back into the base. When the lid is on, the hairline sits down inside the base and can't be seen. In spite of the flaws, it is still a great piece that displays well and still very desirable to both collectors of tobacciana and Black Americana.
