This is a folded letter that contains a STILL PRESENT folded letter. It is collectible because of the fact that the Postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey. It is a collectable item of postal history. A one page letter. Very pretty. Black "BLACK-ROCK N.Y" circular datestamp with the month and day written in manuscript. Addressed to to "G. W. Newell, Esq., Chief Clerk, Canal Department, Albany, N. Y." "Black Rock, February 4th, 1843, G. W. Newell, Esq., Sir, The within statement [not remaining] was received yesterday. I return it as directed today, Yours Respectfully, Elisha H. Burnham." The addressee docketed the item "Elisha H. Burnham, Coll," which I interpret to be that Mr. Burnham is the canal toll collector at Black Rock. This item is from the collection of Calvet Hahn and is accompanied by his original album notes. Mr. Hahn's collection is very fresh to the market. Most of his items have not been offered for sale for 30-40 years. Many of the items are "listing" and/or "recording" items according to his album notes.
