He studied under Samuel Yellin, another blacksmithing legend, and achieved the rank of Master Blacksmith. In 1997, Whitaker was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship in the Traditional Arts by the National Endowment for the Arts. Whitaker is generally credited with inspiring the revival of interest in the craft and art of blacksmithing that began soon after he founded his blacksmithing school in Colorado in the 1960s.At the beginning of the book, Whitaker wrote: This book is dedicated to Samuel Yellin. It was at his forge in Philadelphia that my career began, in 1922 at age 15.
