This auction is for a map of Nimmegen, Netherlands, printed by Johannes (or Joan) Blaeu. We're assuming it was pulled from a copy of his Tooneel der Steeden (Views of Cities) published in 1649-1651. At least, we THINK it's in the Netherlands...the double-headed eagle to the right of the legend makes us wonder. This map measures 16-3/4" x 22". Trouble is, it was "repaired" long ago with strips of paper glued to the back along the hinge... BIG mistake. What's weird is that there's no indication the paper ever tore or split along that hinge...it's like it never needed to be done in the first place. Same thing goes for what looks like a wide strip of early kraft paper along the back of the left-hand border: it doesn't look like it was ever needed there, whereas it WAS needed on the other side, where there is none! We're hoping a good soak / bleach / press will restore this map to some small measure of collectibility. The map's ALMOST all there; shallow portions of the right-hand border have been lost. It begs for the mercies of a paper conservator to make it better! The toning of the map is similar to what's seen in the close-up pix; the overall front & back shots were done with a flash which came out a bit too much on the yellow side. Considering what these maps sell for in better condition, we'd like to think there's SOME sort of value left to be had here after some 360 years! SOLD AS IS; SORRY, BUT NO RETURNS ON THIS ITEM. Item will be shipped flat in stiff boards. Winning bidder gets FREE SHIPPING in USA! Overseas extra, please inquire! Thanks for looking!
