Publishers knew that they could make a good sale by collecting strips first published inside a newspaper and placing them in a more "respectable" format. Blondie has been one of the most successful newspaper strips in the history of comics. It's greatest quality is certainly it's characters. However, the hidden reason for it's long life may well be Young's incredible ability to adapt his strip to that the public liked. When she first appeared in 1930 her full name was Blondie Boopadoop and she was a wild young thing. Creator and artist Chic Young did not intend to create a housewife. He had intended to do a "pretty girl" strip. Everything changed when Blondie accepted her boyfriend Dagwood's marriage proposal. When he first appeared in the strip Dagwood was the son of a very wealthy man. Unfortunately, his family saw Blondie as below his status in life. So when he married Blondie, they disowned him.
