Offeredat no reserve is an exceptional antique silverplate footed brideâe(tm)s basket in a Victorian Aesthetic style with a central Peacock Blue Mary Gregory glass bottom. It is marked on the inside of one of the legs âeoeTaunton Silverplate Co. Quadruple Plate.âe (It is double stamped and quite difficult to make out.)We were unable to find another example of this and yet it appears to be a factory-complete piece as t are four silverplate balls on the underside rim holding the glass in place and on top, the rim of the glass disk is underneath the rim of the opening. The basket measures approx. 10 in. tall, with the handle up âe" you have to work a bit to make the handle balance in the up position. Without the handle, the basket measures approx. 3 ½ in. tall. The diameter of the opening is about 9 7/16 in. The hand painted image on the peacock blue glass shows a girl standing against a fence amidst trees and plants. She is reaching out to a bird. The basket is beautifully ornamented, with stylized flowers and tendrils around the upper rim and a more geometric decoration around the opening at the bottom. Each highly ornamented foot depicts a gargoyle-like winged caryatid (we think that is what it is called). The handle has a twisted effect with a crest and other design devices in the center of the handle. T is gadroon decoration in at least two spots. Beneath the gadrooned outer top rim, the outer sides of the basket are unadorned until you reach the bottom edge. Condition is very good. The glass has a few light scratches and the uppermost part of the basketâe(tm)s rim has a couple of spots w it seems every so slightly irregular. The handle itself has some show-through to the underlying metal and if one looked hard enough, I assume one could find other such spots although we donâe(tm)t see them. We have not attempted to clean the basket or glass in any way although t is old polish residue in some crevices (mostly on the feet and around some joints and detail). We find this a breathtaking piece of Victoriana (and pretty heavy too, weighing nearly 2 lbs.) If you might like to own this fabulous Taunton Silverplate brideâe(tm)s basket with the peacock blue Mary Gregory glass insert, perhaps youâe(tm)ll consider bidding on this.
