Up for auction is a Scarce, Hard to Find, Clinchfield Artware Pottery, also known as Cash Family Pottery of Erwin, Tennessee (1945 to 1988), Hand Painted "Sculptured Fruit" Pitcher / Jug in Mint Condition from after 1959. This beautiful Cash Family Pottery pitcher was made from a mold that originally belonged to the Southern Potteries, Incorporated of Erwin Tennessee manufacturers of the famous and renowned "Blue Ridge China" line of hand painted dinnerware and accessories. In 1959 the Southern Potteries-Blue Ridge company closed their doors for good and liquidated their remaining stock, molds and equipment. Ray and Pauline Cash, owners and operators of the Clinchfield Artware Pottery were able to purchase some of the old Blue Ridge molds and continued to make some of the popular shapes for many years to come. Often times the Blue Ridge dinnerware and Cash Family wares are hard to tell apart until you see the mark on the bottom. This is the case with this awsome jug and chances are that a former decorator-painter from the Blue Ridge pottery also painted this fine Cash Family example. This simple style of beautiful hand painted semi-porcelain wares on generally white or cream colored backgrounds has become a heritage and tradition in the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the town of Erwin, Tennessee. Most importantly the talented and artistic force behind these wares has developed from the locals who live in the area as well. The Southern Potteries, Incorporated and the Clinchfield Artware Pottery are now long gone, but this tradition still lives on in the region through several small potteries who continue to make and hand paint whiteware china. This wonderful hand painted Cash Family version is actually scarcer and harder to find than the original Blue Ridge made jug. One reason for this may be that the Clinchfield Artware items were made mostly as decorative pieces and usable vases seem to make up the bulk of their product line. The Cash's had no way to know their pottery would become so collectible some day. They were in business to create a quality product, but they also knew the value of getting the product into the market and making more, tfore on most all Cash Family Pottery only one side is fully decorated and only if a trim color was used will you see anything on the other sides of their wares. This pitcher involved more labor, time and materials to produce which would explain its scarcity. The fruit is relief molded into the piece, but the hand painting was executed expertly over the raised or "Scuptured Fruit", the colors are vibrant and they mix together wonderfully. The trim color actually decides the name for the piece, so this pitcher is a "Speckled Brown" pitcher and I know the Cash Family also trimmmed this pitcher in cobalt blue sometimes. This pitcher has absolutely no chips or cracks and it has no glaze crazing anyw on the piece. I consider this pitcher mint even though t is some spotting and discoloration on the inside. In no way does the inside spotting take away from the aesthetic value of this piece or its structual integrity. T are also some dry spots within the brown trim of the top edge of the pitcher and these are factory flaws and they are not chips. These tiny dry areas are also not visible in the photos because of the brown trim, but for accuracy sake they need to be mentioned. This pitcher is basically rectangular in shape so it measures in at about 4 1/2 inches by 4 inches. It is also the 7 inch tall pitcher and it weighs 1 1/2 pounds or 1 pound, 7.8 ounces to be exact. I know within the Blue Ridge Line this pitcher was offered in other sizes and my research indicates the Cash Family acquired the other size molds as well. What I don't know is w this particular pitcher fits in size-wise within what I believe was 3 available sizes. I know it's not the smallest pitcher, but I don't know if this is the medium or large size jug ( I will attempt to revise this about the size and your emails are invited also).
