This important Vietnamese ceramic, a matched top-bottom blue and white cylindrical box is from the late 15th century, of Le/Mac Dynasty period (1428Â-1524). The beautiful, blue and white - matched top-bottom - box is decorated on the top with a central floral medallion, with a very lightly raised button center from which radiating petals surrounded by 2 concentric outer circles with classic scrolls. The matched top and bottom body is conjoined, and surrounded by classic scrolls, or scrolling tendrils. Provenance These treasures of the Hoi An Hoard: Important Vietnamese Ceramics from a late 15th/early 16th Century Cargo Junk, which sank some 500 years ago off the coast of Vietnam near Cu Lao Cham, Hoi An, the closest port to Chu Dau, the center of Vietnamese ceramic production at that time. The salvage of the shipwrecked cargo was commissioned by the Vietnamese government and was jointly conducted from 1997 to 1999 by Saga Horizons (SAGA), a Malaysian salvage company, state-owned Vietnam Salvage (VISAL) and Oxford MARE, the Marine Archaeology Research Division of Oxford University, England. The offered item was recovered from this famous Â"Hoi AnÂ" shipwreck cargo, and was obtained through one of Butterfields Auctioneers auction events or one of Butterfields private sale events. What was the Â"Hoi AnÂ" shipwreck? The Era During the 15 th century, the Ming dynasty in China had decreed a ban on maritime exports of ceramics artefacts to the Southeast Asian and other countries, and imposed bans on its own ceramics industry. The markets experienced a sudden shortage of ceramics and porcelain. Domestic demand and especially export opportunities gave Viet Nam the incentives to foster ceramics and porcelain production with unprecedented speed. Vietnam archaeology had shown that over the 15 th and 16 th centuries, during the Le/Mac dynasties of Dai Viet (Great Viet) - a number of ceramics production centers developed in the region stretching from Hanoi to Hai Duong province.
