Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) Chinese Cobalt Crane Plate

The Crane has long been an auspicious symbol and is one of the most important birds in Chinese legends and art. The Crane is believed to be immortal and is one of the symbols meaning long life and longevity. This cobalt blue decorated plate dates from late in the Qing dynasty, about 1850-1899. The Crane is pictured in front of a pine tree which is another symbol for long life, wisdom, and good luck. The underside of the plate has a cloud decoration. The plate is a very fine example of cobalt glazes of the Qing Dynasty. Except for a few very minor firing defects in the glaze this plate is in excellent condition. It shows wear from age and use but does not have any chips, cracks, or repairs. The diameter is 11" and it is 1-1/8" deep. This piece is from the Estate of Mr. & Mrs Robert Kenny. The Kenny's lived in California and acquired their collection between 1900 and 1950. We purchased this item directly from a family member that has relocated to Tucson.

This plate has also been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Cultural Anthropologist, retired from the University of Arizona. Dr. Jones has on numerous occasions been invited to Beijing and has had 'free run' of the Beijing Museum, including the 'basement' treasures hidden away from view. Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal business, and is certified RPA-IAA. Dr. Jones can be reached at . He helps in our verifications of all our later porcelains, as I do for him on the older items of Jades and pottery. He has no vested interest in our business and we just truly enjoy each others company and knowledge.
