LARGE AND LOVELY FISHSCALE AND ROSES SLOP JAR with LID Fill this beauty with sunflowers! WOW - what a statement! DESCRIPTION This is a large piece! Stands 14 inches high with the lid on. The base alone is 10 inches tall not including the raised handle. The diameter across the top of the jar is 9 1/2 inches. This utilitarian piece has survived with minimal damage. Retains the original bail handle and lid. Jar itself has suffered one chip on the edge above the bail handle insert which measures 3/4 inch wide. No other chips, cracks or hairlines to base. T are the usual imperfections in the clay that are indicative of the age and manufacturing process. Base is marked EDH in the clay. The lid has a hairline crack running inward from an under-edge chip (underside of lid). Lid and base are beautifully color-matched as they should be. The Fishscale and Roses pattern is clearly defined and simply lovely! A WORD ABOUT THE TERM "SLOP JAR" I am constantly getting the "UGH's" from customers who mistakenly confuse the use of the slop jar and the chamber pot. The slop jar was never intended to be used for human waste as was the chamber pot . Rather, the slop jar was used to collect the dirty water from the wash basin to be transported outdoors and dumped. Even the Victorians knew enough not to mix the two though I suspect that some poorer and less educated people might! So forget the 'Ugh!!" factor and just enjoy the beauty of this very substantial piece! Looks absolutely stunning filled with a mixed bouquet of flowers atop a country table.
